Do not bet on a new era of equality in football

I was looking over my posts from last year and saw this one “Is the Football Season Over Already”  which referred to the dominant start to the season on Manchester City and PSG. I said they would probably both win the league, but not because of their early results but because of their financial dominance.

Well, Manchester City, not so much. But before we start talking about fundamental shifts, it is worth noting tat PSG did win Ligue 1 by a mile, as did Bayern in the Bundesliga. Juventus won Serie A, and either Barca or Real Madrid will win La Liga (it would be nice if Atletico Madrid could win the Champions League, but the chances of an upset in cup competitions are always larger).

This is, almost, business as usual. People have been asking if Leicester City can repeat their feat. I think that is missing the point, which is to celebrate an extraordinary and exceptional achievement- as continued dominance of the big clubs in the rest of Europe amply demonstrates.
